Assynt Waterfalls and Lochs
Assynt has an unusually varied geology and is home to 680 freshwater lochs. The largest is the spectacular Loch Assynt, which is surrounded by the peaks of Canisp, Quinag and Beiin Uidhe.
Scotland's highest and most beautiful waterfalls are amongst those that can be found in this unforgettable region of Scotland. Each waterfall offers breathtaking views for hikers and a chance to stop, pause, and feel at one with nature.
Wailing Widow
Known as the most beautiful waterfalls in Scotland, the Wailing Widow Falls offer breathtaking views from both above and below. Though hidden from the road, they're easily reachable from the A894 just past the Kylesku Bridge.
Eas a' Chual Aluinn
The magical Eas a' Chual Aluinn is Britain's highest waterfall with a sheer drop of 200 metres. The best views can be found from the 5.8km trail starting at Loch na Gainmhich, or from a boat trip that runs by the Kylesku Hotel to Loch Beag.
Kirkaig Falls
Located on the River Kirkaig, these spectacular falls plunge nearly 20 metres into a rocky ravine and are especially impressive after heavy rain. You'll find them on the main approach route to Suilven.
Allt nan Uamh
You'll find the small but beautiful Allt nan Uamh waterfall on the approach to the Inchnadamph Bone Caves, a series of natural caves set into the high limestone cliff Creag nan Uamh.
Clashnessie Falls
A short walk upstream from Clashnessie Bay will take you to these spectacular 15 metre falls that transcend from the lochans above. Clashnessie Falls gets its name from the Gaelic 'Clais an Easaidh' meaning 'hollow/valley of the waterfall'.
Achness Falls
Achness Falls, also known locally as the Cassley Falls, transcends a narrow gorge on the River Cassley. Its name is derived from the Gaelic 'Acn-an-eas' meaning 'field of the waterfall'.
Ardvreck Castle Waterfall
The Ardvreck Castle Waterfall flows down into Loch Assynt, right by the historic castle ruins. The waterfall can be easily reached from the carpark and there are lots of walks to be made around the loch.
Loch Assynt
Loch Assynt is a 6 mile long freshwater loch 5 miles east-north east of Lochinver. Situated in a spectacular setting between the heights of Canisp, Quinag and Beinn Uidhe. There is excellent fishing for trout, sea-trout, and salmon. Ardvreck Castle occupies a promontory on the north shore, one mile northwest of Inchnadamph.
