Cul Mor
Meaning “big hill at the back”
Cul Mor is right on the edge of the parish and used to be known locally as Marilyn. Located in the Inverpolly Nature Reserve, this hill is Torridonian Sandstone overlaid with Cambrian Quartz. Being in the Nature Reserve there is a chance, if you are lucky, to see a Ptarmigan.
This fantastic walk has an excellent path which is supplemented by a series of cairns dedicated to walkers every 100m to show the route. Partway, there is a hidden gem of a loch, with waterfalls that run into and out of it, offering magnificent views, plus a 200m long sandy beach where you can stop and soak it all in.
As the climb continues, you may find it frustrating due to several false peaks, where you can’t see any higher and assume that as soon as you’re over it you’ll be at the top – but you won’t be! When you reach the final ascent, however, any frustration will fall away once you see the views. Northwards you’ll spot Suilven, Canisp and Quinaig, and to the south west the wedge of Cul Beag with the Coigach hills behind - among other hills.
You might also spot the Ledmore Marble Quarry from Meallan Diomhain, where last century marble was transported via a track through the hills to boats waiting on the coast at Kylesku. This marble was used in the grand mansion houses of the south during the Napoleonic Wars when Italian marble was unavailable.
